DALEKS ARE TOO TALL FOR NEW DOCTOR

DAILY STAR SUNDAY
ABOVE: New Dr Who actor Matt Smith
21st March 2010

By Edward Gleave

Doctor Who bosses have had to shrink the Daleks because they are too tall for actor Matt Smith.

At 5ft 10in, the new Time Lord is three inches shorter than his predecessor David Tennant.

But TV chiefs always like the Daleks’ infamous eye stalks to meet with their greatest enemy’s peepers when they face off.

So they have had to make the pepper pot-shaped monsters smaller.

Actor Matt, 27, admitted: “The new Dalek eye stalks are designed to meet the level of my own eyes.

“They made them from my measurements.”

And a show source added: “We’ve had to make a new set of Daleks especially for Matt.

“They are a bit smaller and they will be unveiled later in the series. They look sensational.”

The new series of Doctor Who will start on Easter Saturday on BBC1 with an hour-long opening episode called The Eleventh Hour.

But the Daleks will not be the only familiar faces coming back.

Fans can expect to see the return of the show’s scariest-ever monsters, the Weeping Angels, who are rumoured to be even more frightening than ever.

And the reptillian Silurians, one of the Doctor’s old foes, will make a re-appearance after more than 20 years along with the dreaded Cybermen.

There will also be a host of petrifying new monsters designed to make young viewers hide behind their sofas.

These include the evil Smilers – doll-like figures who turn nasty when their grin turns to a frown – vampires and also a grotesque shape shifter called Prisoner Zero.

Matt has also revealed that he has paid homage to former Doctor Tom Baker, 76, who used to keep a bag of Jelly Babies in his pocket while playing the role from 1974 to 1981.

Instead of the soft sweets, the new time traveller will have his own snack – he will be seen munching on Jammy Dodgers.
