ARSENAL SCORE IN THE NIC OF TIME
Hull City 1 Arsenal 2
NICKLAS Bendtner struck in stoppage time as Arsenal beat 10-man Hull to keep pace with Chelsea at the top.
[>
[>
The title-chasing Gunners went in front when Andrey Arshavin prodded in after 14 minutes.[>
[>
Jimmy Bullard equalised with a penalty in the 28th minute after a clumsy Sol Campbell foul on Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink.[>
[>
Arsenal struggled to break down Hull after the dismissal of George Boateng on the stroke of half-time – but Danish sizzler Bendtner earned a fifth straight win after Boaz Myhill spilled Denilson’s swerving shot.[>
[>
Arsenal were nowhere near as good as they were during the midweek 5-0 Champions League win over Porto.[>
[>
But Hull must be given credit for disrupting their rhythm and they were unlucky to suffer their fourth defeat in a row.[>
The Tigers remain in the relegation zone with nine games left.[>
[>
Bullard kept his place and Nick Barmby dropped to the bench in one of six changes made by Phil Brown after last Sunday’s 5-1 thrashing at Everton.[>
[>
The pair were involved in a midweek bust-up in front of members of the Women’s Institute near the Humber Bridge.[>
Jozy Altidore flashed a 20-yarder wide after turning Campbell early on before Arsene Wenger’s men pounced on the break.[>
[>
Having scored three on Tuesday, it was no surprise to see Bendtner involved in the opener.[>
The Dane found Arshavin with a pass across the edge of the box and the Russian stumbled through challenges by Boateng and Bernard Mendy before beating Myhill. [>
[>
Hull levelled after Dean Marney’s ball was flicked on by Craig Fagan to Vennegoor of Hesselink. The Dutchman looked offside.[>
[>
But Campbell’s attempted tackle led ref Andre Marriner to point to the spot and Bullard found the top corner.[>
Campbell was booked and Hull’s Andy Dawson followed for a late tackle on Denilson.[>
[>
Boateng and Bendtner were also yellow carded for an exchange in the aftermath of the foul.[>
And the Hull captain was soon off for an early shower after a high challenge on Sagna saw him earn a second yellow.[>
[>
But in a scrappy opening to the second half Kamil Zayatte was fouled by Campbell and had to go off moments later.[>
Campbell said: “We deserved the win.
[>
[>
“We kept probing, played some great football and created some great chances and it was all down to Nicklas knocking one in at the end.[>
[>
“It was a tight game but the main thing is we got the win.”[>
Bendtner said: “It felt really good. [>
[>
“The goal was so long in coming and at 1-1 it was really tense and we were trying to push on.[>
“All goals you score are important but especially today and I’m pleased for the team that we won the game.”[>
Wenger added: “We started well but when we were 1-0 up we lost our focus and took it a bit too easy.[>
[>
“When it was 1-1 I knew we had to battle because suddenly Hull’s belief raised. [>
“We needed to fight until the last second and fortunately we got the late goal.[>
[>
“Unfortunately Boateng deserved to go but you can understand these challenges. [>
“If teams are fighting not to go out of the Premier League you understand that commitment.”[>
Brown said: “Our fight, spirit and commitment were there for everybody to see.”[>
