MICHAEL JACKSON'S DOCTOR GUILTY OF KILLING

ABOVE: Dr Conrad Murray arrives at court
9th February 2010

By Tony Walton

MICHAEL Jackson’s doctor was last night formally charged with killing the King of Pop.

Dr. Conrad Murray faces up to four years in jail if a court finds him guilty.

He appeared in court for the first time and pleaded not guilty to “involuntary manslaughter”.

The doctor, a heart specialist and Jacko’s live-in physician at the time of his death, ran a gauntlet of hate when he arrived at the Los Angeles Superior Court.

Fans outside held placards and yelled abuse, including “murderer” and “Justice for Michael”.

Inside, seven members of the Jackson family sat grim-faced as the long-awaited court procedure finally began.

The pop superstar’s father Joe, 80, and mother Katherine led the family line-up.

Also there were sister La Toya, 53, and four of her brothers, Jermaine, 55, Tito, 56, Jackie, 58, and Randy, 53.

Prosecutors say Murray caused Jackson’s death by administering a powerful sedative Propofol to help him sleep.

The Thriller star, pictured right, died at his rented LA mansion last June 25.

His death was ruled a homicide, with Propofol “playing a significant role”.

The drug is rarely administered outside a hospital.

Murray, 56, faces a single count that he “did unlawfully, and without malice, kill Michael Joseph Jackson” by acting “without the caution and circum- spection required”.

His bail was set at $75,000, three times the normal amount for such cases.

He was taken into custody for booking after a judge told him: “I do not want you sedating people.”

Murray, who was also ordered to surrender his passport, is due back in court on April 5.

His lawyer Ed Chernoff told reporters: “We will fight like hell.”

Re: Michael Jackson's doctor guilty of killing

How can the headline say "Guilty of killing", before he has been found guilty?
