HOME IN ON HOTSPOTS

ABOVE: British retreats can be romantic
9th February 2010

By James Moore

IT’s not too late to whisk your loved one away to a romantic hotspot. Here some top UK top destinations.

LOVE’S A BEACH

A winter stroll on the sand is the perfect way to get swept off your feet. Head to the sexily named Lusty Gaze Beach in Newquay, Cornwall, or Rhossili Beach on Wales’s Gower Peninsula, which was recently voted the best place in the country to watch a sunset.

OUR POSTER PASSION

Want to spend the night in a romantic four-poster bed? There are hundreds of hotels across the country that boast them. Website bestloved.com has a list of the most romantic to visit.

THRILLS AND SPILLS

They say love is a roller-coaster and Britain’s theme parks are setting out to prove it. Lots are open for Valentine’s specials including Blackpool’s Pleasure Beach (blackpoolpleasurebeach.com) and Alton Towers (altontowers.com).

PUT BACK THE SPARKLE

Take your partner on a romantic shopping trip. Birmingham could be the city to seek out. It’s famed for its jewellery quarter.

LOVERS’ LANDMARKS

Take your lover to another level at a local landmark. Visit Warwick Castle – recently voted the hottest building for a date – and check out their Bloody Valentine evening. Or how about trying out some ancient fertility rituals at the sexiest monument in Britain, the Cerne Abbas giant in Dorset? Or maybe share a glass of bubbly at London’s St Pancras Station. It has the world’s longest champagne bar. You could even meet by the famous Lovers statue there.

GET RACY

Back a gorgeous filly at a racecourse. Exeter Racecourse in Devon has a Valentine’s Day meet and it is offering entry to the grandstand and paddocks at £10 for two. Newbury racecourse in Berkshire has a special lover’s bench where horse fans can pop the question.

FIND A SPA-ING

PARTNER

Want to enjoy some pampering time together? Two Handpicked Hotels are offering Valentine’s detox days, including a full body detoxifying salt scrub, detox aroma back, neck and shoulder massage plus use of the spa’s facilities for just £55 each. The package is available at Nutfield Priory, Surrey, and Rookery Hall, Cheshire, until the end of February. See lastminute.com for loads of other spa offers.

ON THE PULL: Single? Why not head off for a weekend on the pull with your mates. Hull is the UK’s most romantic city, according to research by a flower delivery service while a poll revealed that Leeds is the best place to pull - with the most attractive and friendliest locals.
