KIDS USE 150 LANGUAGES AT SCHOOL

ABOVE: School kids in Reading use 150 languages
9th February 2010

By Richard Peppiatt

A town’s schools are struggling to cope with pupils who speak 150 languages.

They include the Ghanaian dialect of Akan, the ancient Aztec tongue of Nahuatl, and Chichewa, which is spoken in central Africa.

Tory MP Philip Davies said: “It’s very worrying and Labour’s lax immigration policies are a huge factor in this. It is also a result of political correctness. We haven’t made people integrate properly into British society.”

Reading Council is now offering discounted lessons to solve the problem.

Lesley Reilly, the council’s head of adult learning, said: “Our target is to reach more men, unemployed people, learners recently arrived in Reading, and parents of pupils.”

Even the Government admitted the language findings in the town are “extraordinary”.

But yesterday the Department for Children, Schools and Families said pupils with English as a second language often overtake their native-speaking peers academically.

A spokesman said: “Having English as a second language doesn’t always mean that English skills are poor.

“It only indicates the language to which the child was initially exposed early on at home.”
