ANDY MURRAY IS CHEERED ON IN VICTORY OVER JUAN MARTIN DEL POTRO

ANDY Murray will still have to make full use of home advantage to reach the semi-finals of the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals for a second successive year.

The British No.1 began his campaign at a packed O2 Arena on Sunday, with 17,000 fans cheering Murray on to a 6-3 3-6 6-2 victory over US Open champion Juan Martin del Potro.

The Scot faces world no.1 Roger Federer tonight and then dangerous Spanish star Fernando Verdasco in the round-robin stage of the season-ending event.

But having made the perfect start, Murray said: “It obviously helps a lot (to win your first game) but you have got to pretty much win two matches out of the three to give yourself a chance. I could still win two and not go through.

“I’ll try and get the next one out of the way. If I can win that one, I’ll put myself in a good position.”

In the other group, Sweden’s Robin Soderling came back to haunt Rafael Nadal again yesterday, beating him 6-4 6-4.

Soderling, who ended Nadal’s 32-match winning streak at the French Open, made full use of his powerful forehand on a fast court to see off the Spaniard.
