ENGLAND BOWLERS GIFT BANGLADESH

DAILY STAR SUNDAY
ABOVE: Tamim Iqbal
21st March 2010

By Ian Baker

DEBUT-boy James Tredwell says his fellow bowlers gifted Tamim Iqbal a birthday gift as Bangladesh went on a run rampage yesterday.

Outplayed in Chittagong, the hosts thumped England’s below-par bowling attack all over the park.

Tamim hit 85 off 71 balls on his 21st birthday as Bangladesh batted down the order to close day one of the second Test on 330-8.

And Kent star Tredwell – who later took two wickets – believes that was far too many.

He said: “We’d have liked to have kept them under 300. But we’re reasonably happy with clawing them back and getting them eight down.

“Honours are even but it was good to get them to eight down and we have to be happy with that.”

England dropped FIVE catches with captain Alastair Cook guilty of three howlers.

Paul Collingwood put down the first catch in Tim Bresnan’s first over and Tamim was then let off the hook on 35 as Cook dropped a real dolly off pace man Stuart Broad at mid-off. Broad did pick up the wicket of Imrul Kayes (12) the very next ball as Steve Finn took an outstanding catch in the covers.

But Tamim – who scored 125 in last month’s first ODI here – celebrated his coming of age by laying into England’s feeble bowlers.

Yet Tredwell crucially calmed Tamim down with his first over in Test cricket – a maiden.

The off-spinner really frustrated the youngster and eventually forced Tamim into a mistake and he top-edged to keeper Matt Prior.

Bangladesh debutant Juhurul Islam then fell to Graeme Swann for a duck while Junaid Siddique (39) and Mahmudullah (59) departed soon after lunch to Swann and Finn, respectively.

But England’s fielding woes continued. It was Tredwell who suffered the most as Cook – who had earlier failed to snare Mahmudullah – missed a close catch off Shakib Al Hasan.

Tredwell got his reward after tea with Shakib falling leg-before for 49 but Prior failed to hold on an easy catch from Mushfiqur Rahim.

Prior eventually redeemed himself as Rahim departed off Bresnan’s bowling and Swann claimed his third wicket, Abdur Razzak, lbw for three.
